SubtitleMate is designed to be privacy-first. We do not collect, store, transmit, or sell any personally identifiable information (PII). Specifically, we do not track your browsing history, your YouTube watch history, your Google or YouTube account credentials, your IP address for profiling, or any video, subtitle, or translation content you view.
The Extension operates entirely on your device. There is no account to register, no login wall, and no backend database that receives your data. Because no personal data leaves your browser, there is nothing for us to retain, share, or expose.
Your preferences — such as caption mode (translate or auto-generated), target language, playback speed, and the automatic-reload-on-failure toggle — are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's Storage APIs (chrome.storage.sync and chrome.storage.local). These values stay on your own device.
They are never uploaded to our servers, never sent to third parties, and never used for analytics. If you uninstall the Extension, these local settings are removed together with it. You can also clear them at any time by resetting the options inside the popup.
SubtitleMate runs inside the YouTube page you are visiting. Its only purpose is to read the video player's state and select the appropriate caption track (automatically translating it to your chosen language, or enabling English auto-generated captions). All of this happens locally in your browser tab.
No video frames, audio, subtitle text, or translation results are copied, cached, or transmitted anywhere. The Extension does not take screenshots, does not record, and does not build any profile of the videos you watch. Your viewing activity remains strictly between you and YouTube.
SubtitleMate does not integrate with any external analytics, advertising, crash-reporting, or AI inference services. We do not load third-party scripts, pixels, or trackers.
The only network activity the Extension performs is the standard communication Chrome extensions use to function (for example, reading and writing your local settings through chrome.storage). It does not make outbound requests to any domain other than the YouTube page you are currently on. There is no remote code execution and no data sent to any server we operate.
